Who we are
History
The story of Vawda Textiles and Vawda Group is intrinsically linked to one of the most reputed business families in Mauritius.
The journey started in the 19th century when Ahmed Ismael Vawda left his native village, Kathore in the Surat District, India, together with a few relatives. After three months at sea, they landed in Mauritius in 1862. They joined forces to set up a wholesale trading activity at 10, Corderie Street, Port Louis. The merchandise they brought with them (books, white sheeting, grey sheeting, poppling fabrics) constituted their initial stock-in-trade. As the business grew, they opened a branch in New Grove, a small village in the centre of the island. The adventure lasted for twenty years. In 1882, the partnership was dissolved and the founder started trading his own account at 12, Corderie Street, Port Louis. In 1897, the company was entrusted to his son Ismael Ahmed Vawda and renamed after him. I. A. Vawda Co. Ltd has been operational ever since.
In 1939, Ismael Ahmed Vawda reconstituted the partnership with his three sons, Yusuf, Sulleiman and Ebrahim Ismael Vawda. A new era unfolded in the 1980s when Sulleiman Ismael’s grandson, Hossen Mohamed Vawda joined the company. Thanks to his sharp business acumen and understanding of the societal changes, Hossen Mohamed Vawda led the company in an audacious diversification adventure. The undertaking paid off and the company was now also engaged in supplying fabrics for workers’ uniforms, fashion fabrics as well as in real estate/property management. In 2018, the sixth generation of Vawdas, Sulleiman and Sameea, were handed over the family business. They pursue the same passion of their forefathers for quality fabrics at fair pricing.
